Iraq's Cultural HeritageIraq's cultural heritage is indeed the heritage
of human civilization. It was in that Cradle of Civilization that
many inventions took place (writing, the wheel, and irrigation
technology), and where the first codes of law and economy were
                documented.
The discovery of Iraq's ancient civilization
took shape under figures who became legends in their fields: Austen
Henry Layard, discoverer of Nineveh, the ancient Assyrian
capital (later he became to be known as Layard of Nineveh), and
                H. V. Hilprecht, who took history's clock a few thousand
years back when he discovered Nippur. The early discoverers and
historians, like George Rawlinson and George Smith,
reported on the ancient sites of Iraq long before all the wars
that ravaged that region. Their illustrations -- usually from
their own hand drawings and numerous in their books-- give a picture
of the ancient sites before they came under the ravages of the
natural elements, and long series of wars that befell that land.
Gorgias Press is pleased to bring you many of
these works in new editions and sometimes with new introductions
written by today's scholars. Following is a selection of books
                on Iraq's cultural heritage:

                 Bell, Gertrude. Amurath
to Amurath: A Journey Along the Banks of the Euphrates.
Gertrude Bell was the foundress of the Iraq Museum, and helped
in creating the modern state of Iraq. Amurath to Amurath
is an account of some of her travels in Iraq and neighboring
countries, with over 250 photos of daily life and ancient sites.
                A. H. Layard, Nineveh
and Its Remains (with a New Introduction by Prof.
Stephanie Dalley), 2 volumes. Describes the discovery Nineveh
in Northern Iraq, the ancient capital of Assyria. It intersperses
journeys and descriptions of people and places with accounts
of archaeological discoveries. Layards romantic view of
the countryside and people blended with his rediscovery of Assyria.

A. H. Layard, Discoveries
in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon. The sequel to the
author's Nineveh and Its Remains (also available from Gorgias
                  Press); with over 250 illustrations.

 A. H. Layard, Early
Adventures in Persia, Susiana, and Babylonia, including a Residence
Among the Bekhtiyari and Other Wild Tribes Before the Discovery
of Nineveh. Layard of Nineveh tells his adventures in
Iraq and Iran with fascinating tales. The original edition of
this title retails for over $1100 (Gorgias Press's edition is
for $120 for the two-volume set).

Rawlinson, George. The
Seven Great Monarchies of the Ancient Eastern World.
An illustrated history of the ancient kingdoms of the Near East,
including ancient Iraq, with over 750 woodcut engravings of
the ancient relics of Iraq and neighboring countries.

Smith, George. Assyrian
Discoveries. The book was written to give in a permanent
form some account of the excavations undertaken in 1873 and
1874 on the site of Nineveh; and the principle discoveries which
have resulted from these operations. Gorgias Press also brings you accounts of the forgotten minorities
